Sir Douglas Lunge invented the "lunge" in 1829.
He's pictured here at one of his "lunge parties", demonstrating the technique to attendees eager to learn the fashionable new movement.
Years later, after lunging fell out of favor, he came out of retirement and tried to make a comeback by inventing the "desperate lunge", but it never really caught on in civilized society.
